Celebrating Juneteenth: A Weekend of Community, Crafts, and Song

Last weekend, the museum had the privilege of taking part in two different Juneteenth celebrations, one right here in our own courtyard, and another out in the community alongside our Mobile Museum trailer. It was a weekend full of music, conversation, and connection, and we wanted to share a look back at both.
Juneteenth Family Fun Day at the Museum
Our courtyard was full of life as we hosted a Juneteenth-themed Family Fun Day. Families came together for an afternoon of hands-on crafts, snacks, and community celebration, all centered around the history and meaning of Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned they had been freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Kids and adults alike got creative with a variety of craft stations, refueled with snacks throughout the afternoon, and gathered to enjoy a moving choir performance that filled the courtyard with song. There's something special about hearing live music outdoors on a warm June afternoon, and the performance was a highlight of the day for everyone in attendance.
Events like this give us a chance to mark an important piece of American history in a way that's accessible and meaningful for the whole family, and we loved seeing our courtyard full of neighbors doing just that.
Mobile Museum at the J.J. Jones Juneteenth Celebration
While Family Fun Day was happening at our courtyard, our Mobile Museum trailer was out representing us at the JJ Jones Juneteenth celebration. Taking the museum on the road is always one of our favorite ways to connect with the community, especially for events like this one, where so many people gathered to celebrate together.
Bringing the Mobile Museum to community events like the JJ Jones celebration lets us meet people where they are and share a bit of what we do with folks who might not otherwise make it through our doors. It's always a great reminder of why we love being part of this community.
Looking Back, and Looking Ahead
Juneteenth is a day for reflection, celebration, and remembrance, and we were honored to be able to mark it in two different ways this year, both at home in our courtyard and out in the wider community. Thank you to everyone who came out to craft, snack, sing, and celebrate with us. We're already looking forward to next year.
