Calling All Young Historians: The Tar Heel Junior Historians Club is Back!

Is your child curious about history, their community, and the world around them? The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History is excited to announce that the Tar Heel Junior Historians Club is returning for the 2026–2027 school year, and we'd love for your student to be a part of it!
What is the Tar Heel Junior Historians Club?
The Tar Heel Junior Historians Club is a hands-on history program for students in grades 4 through 8, affiliated with the North Carolina Tar Heel Junior Historian Association. Members get to do far more than read about history: they explore it, create projects around it, and engage with it through STEAM activities, field trips, and guest speakers. It's history the way it was meant to be experienced: active, curious, and alive.
Throughout the year, club members will:
Explore local and regional history and learn what makes their community unique
Create original projects that dive deep into historical topics
Participate in STEAM activities that connect history to science, technology, engineering, art, and math
Hear from guest speakers and go on field trips that bring history to life outside the museum walls
Compete at the state level through the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association
Meeting Details
The club meets every Thursday at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. Meeting times shift slightly as the year goes on to accommodate longer project work in the spring:
September – December: Thursdays, 3:30–4:30 PM
January – May: Thursdays, 3:30–5:00 PM
The first meeting of the season is Thursday, September 24, 2026. From there, the club meets weekly through May, with a few breaks around the holidays. Notable dates to keep in mind:
There will be no meetings on November 26 (Thanksgiving week), December 24 or 31 (Christmas break), March 11, or May 20 and 27.
Members are invited to participate in the Mount Airy Christmas Parade on November 19th, which is always a highlight of the fall season!
Field trip dates will be announced throughout the year. Parents are encouraged to help provide transportation for field trips as they come up — more details will be shared as dates are confirmed.

The club uses the Team Reach app to keep members and families informed throughout the year. Parents are encouraged to download the app to stay up to date on meeting reminders, field trip announcements, and other club news.
