Museum Receives Grant for Semiquincentennial Programming Aimed at Schools

The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History is planning on celebrating the semiquincentennial in a big way! The Museum has been awarded a grant from America250 NC that it will use to bring American history to life in honor of the country’s 250th birthday.

The Museum is putting on a week of free programming, titled “Voices For Freedom”, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s founding. Local schools will be invited to the museum from April 6-10 (Monday through Friday), where they will be greeted by costumed interpreters playing the role of figures from throughout American history. Students will move through time as they move through the museum, encountering historical figures from different time periods as they go. Each figure that they meet will educate the students about the period of history that they represent, and will recite passages from famous speeches and documents. All students who attend will be invited to write their own “declaration” and submit it to the Museum. A winner will be picked by Museum staff, and they will be invited to read their declaration at the Museum’s annual Fourth of July reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Although the focus of this event is on bringing in students from local schools, the following Saturday (April 11), the same program will be open to the public. Admission to this Saturday's program will be free.
