The 9th annual African-American Read-In hosted by the Plaid Cloth Litera
ry Society will be held on Wednesday February 13 at 12 noon in the 2nd floo
r conference room of the Museum. To participate, one needs only to select w
orks written by an African American and be prepared to read a poem or an ex
cerpt from a book. Listeners are also welcome!
In 1990, the fi
rst African American Read-In was sponsored by the Black Caucus of the Natio
nal Council of Teachers of English. In 1991, the National Council of Teache
rs of English joined in the sponsorship. The Read-In has been endorsed by t
he International Reading Association. Over a million readers of all ethnic
groups, from 48 states, the District of Columbia, the West Indies, and Afri
can countries have participated. The goal is to make the celebration of Afr
ican American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities
