Swiss and German immigrants were one of the largest groups in Colonial America after the Thirty Years War and religious upheaval drove them from their homelands to the New World. The majority responded to William Penn's offer of religious tolerance and fertile land but some headed South and West in search of ever more opportunities for their families. The Great Wagon Road brought quite a few here to the back country of NC. The first Wolfensburgers arrived in PA in 1730 settling in Lancaster and Lebanon counties there. Later generations moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Some stayed there. Some moved to the Midwest and some came to Surry County where they had a tremendous impact on the economy and life in the region not to mention, they shortened the name. History Talks are Free and open to the public.
