Volunteer Information

mayberry rfd andy Griffith mayberry nc museum in north Carolina VOLUNTEERING MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE!

Dear Friend of the Museum,

Due to the increase in activity and visitation at the Museum, we need to expand our volunteer program. Our most immediate need is for volunteers at the Reception Desk/Museum Shop and as Museum Docents. The Museum is a pleasant and rewarding place to work. You will also see many of your friends and neighbors from time to time.

Most importantly, you will be helping our very small staff carry out the important areas of work for which they are responsible, without interruption. We cannot emphasize enough, how important our volunteers are to us.

As a volunteer at the reception desk, you would be responsible for answering the telephone and directing calls; greeting visitors and having them sign the guest register; collecting the admission fee, and briefly explaining the layout of the Museum, using our guided-tour map. Since the Museum Shop is located immediately to the right of the reception desk, you would learn the process of selling merchandise and helping customers with their purchases.

Would you be willing to volunteer three (3) hours each month, on either a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, to help us? Your time could be scheduled either in the morning from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM or from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM. A staff person would relieve you for a brief break during your three hours.

To be fully staffed with volunteers in just the areas above, requires between 50 and 60 people each month. This does not include volunteers in the other areas working in collections, doing research and restoration work. We could not do all of the many things we do, were it not for our dedicated volunteers. Please give your thoughtful consideration to this appeal. Please call the Volunteer Coordinator, Nancy Davis, at (336) 786-4478 ext. 229 or email  nmdavis@northcarolinamuseum.org and sign up right away.

The Museum’s Docent Team (Tour Guides) consists of 30 volunteers and welcomes newcomers. We make history fun and interesting! A docent’s volunteer hours can vary from 30 to 80 hours a year, depending on what their schedules allow. This program is open to individuals of all ages and no history background is required. For more information about the Docent Program, please call the Museum at  (336) 786-4478.
