Surry County was in the heart of an area that demonstrated a marked opposition to slavery during the antebellum era. Residents of this region, which ran from approximately Guilford County, NC through Grayson County Va, challenged slavery in a number of ways both passively and actively. This talk, presented by Mount Airy native Dr. Douglas Porter, will explore this fascinating yet virtually forgotten piece of local and regional history. History Talks are held at 2PM on the 3rd floor of the Museum, and are Free to the public.
