Museum camp to expose kids to pioneer life

Children ages 5 and up are invited to join the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History for a week-long Hands-on History Summer Camp July 18-22. This year’s theme will be Pioneer Life in the Hollows.

Matt Edwards, executive director for the museum, said he is excited about this year’s camp because it will be a hands-on camp for kids that will expose them to what life would have been like for early settlers to the Hollows.

Toast and Jam to feature Round Peak wine and Reggie Johnson

The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History is hosting a free wine and music event in hopes to draw interest in museum activities. Toast and Jam will be held Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Matt Edwards, executive director of the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, said it is important to the museum to have people to come out and to learn what the museum has to offer.

Hospitality Academy Gets Grand Tour Of Museum

Those working in the local hospitality industry were treated to a class Tuesday that helped educate them on all there is to do in Mount Airy.
The class, called “What’s there to do around here?” was sponsored by the Small Business Center of Surry Community College and yesterday was hosted by the staff of the Mount Airy Visitor’s Center.

The Jesse Franklin Pioneers chapter of the Tar Heel Junior Historians returned from the state convention victorious for the second year.
This year’s group finished in second place in middle school division video contest despite the fact that only three of the 12 members were actually in middle school. The rest were in elementary school students.

Strength of individuals, community praised at Founder’s Day ceremony

The strength of individuals and the strength of community were recognized at the first Mount Airy Museum of Regional History’s Founder’s Day celebration held Thursday in the Woltz Clock Tower and Courtyard.

Mount Airy Mayor Deborah Cochran gave the opening speech at the gathering. She was accompanied by Vice Mayor Pro tem Steve Yokeley and City Commissioners Scott Graham and Dean Brown.
