No single event in the early twentieth century received more coverage in area newspapers nor sparked more conversation and heated debate than did the courthouse tragedy that happened in nearby Carroll County, Virginia on March 14, 1912. In a small courthouse located in the heart of Hillsville, Virginia, following a judge's ruling on a relatively small matter, five people were shot and killed plus seven others were wounded.

The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History presents a photo-journalism exhibit that tells this 94 year old story which is filled with intrigue involving blockaders, money, politics, power, romance and social justice.

This new temporary exhibit can be seen in the museum's North Gallery on the second floor. Additional photos and artifacts will be added periodically.
