The writings of Hardin E. Taliaferro (1812-1875), one of the "Old Southwest Humorists" who flourished before the Civil War, are presented along with a thoroughly researched biography. Taliaferro set his stories in the isolated North Carolina mountain community where he had been raised. These tall tales rely on rustic social attitudes for much of their comedy.
