Saura Indians

Return to Previous Page

This exhibit is developed around a Bark House, a dugout canoe and other necessities that would have constituted a site where Native Americans in the region would have dwelled.

A little-known tribe, the Saura, was living peacefully in this region in the 1600s. Through university field studies, the tribe has been identified, and some artifacts and remnants of their culture preserved for study and interpretation.

Some say that all of the Saura have disappeared and that remnants of their rich cultural heritage are recorded in journals, still buried in the earth. Others claim blood-ties to the Saura and retain their cultural identity. The Saura story lives on and is a vital part of the history of this region.
