Pilot Mountain, located in Surry County, is one of North Carolina's National Natural Landmarks. It is a remnant of the ancient Sauratown Mountains with an elevation of 2420 feet. The mountain is capped by two prominent pinnacles. The native Saura Indians called Pilot Mountain, Jomeokee- the "Great Guide" or "Pilot." The mountain was mapped in 1752 by Joshua Frye and Peter Jefferson, father of President Thomas Jefferson. In 1968, Pilot Mountain was purchased from Mrs. J.W. Beasley to become North Carolina's 14th State Park.
