The Moravians have founded Churches in this area of North Carolina since the 1750s. In 1921, Rev. C.D. Crouch began preaching in Mount Airy; three years later, Bishop Edward Rondthaler located land to build the church where it stands today. Grace Moravian Church was organized with 97 charter members on March 15, 1925 and later that year the granite cornerstone was laid. Rev. Edward Mickey, who was pastor from 1933-1944, organized the church band. When the teenager, Andy Griffith, heard about this preacher who taught music, he came with his trombone to ask about lessons. Rev. Mickey invited him to join the band, which led to Andy's whole family joining the church. In March 2004, this congregation celebrated its 80th anniversary with a membership that now stands at 435.
