The Andy Griffith Playhouse is the seventh ornament in the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History's annual series. The playhouse was added to Rockford Street Elementary School in 1933, serving as the auditorium and gymnasium for over 40 years. Mr. Griffith attended the school and was on stage numerous times for plays. The playhouse is now named in his honor. The building and stage standing today serve as a performing arts center and the home of the Surry Arts Council.
